We Own The Night

(2007)

2.5 STARS

I have come to expect a lot more, maybe too much from Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Wahlberg and Robert Duvall which is possibly why this movie was such a letdown. The story seemed at times rushed and at other times just too farfetched and still at other times I just didn't like it, for no other reason than it just wasn't all that good. I felt like this movie wanted to be The Departed but instead just came off as a less than powerful movie in the same vain.

Here is another one of those movies where hype hurt it because I was expecting far better things than I actually got, and that just doesn't seem good enough.

3 STARS

We Own The Night is a dark depressing look at the life of a multi-generational police family. One brother (Wahlberg) is an ambitious cop and the other brother (Phoenix) runs a night club owned by the Russian Mob. Robert Duvall plays their father, who is also a cop, and who is having a hard time holding his family together.

The story borders on morbidly depressing, the highest point in the film (emotionally speaking) is when one of the brothers exacts brutal revenge on a member of the mob. So, it's not a feel good story. But, if you happen to be in the mood for a somber police drama, they don't come much more somber than this.
